Statement of No “Guilt”
I, Chen Jingyuan, male, born in 1976, a citizen of China, and holding a Doctor of Science (Ph.D.) degree, was violently arrested by the Qianwei Police Station in Kunming during a brief stay in September 2022 on baseless and nonsensical grounds, akin to a “trumped-up charge.” In January 2023, the Xishan District Procuratorate prosecuted me under the notoriously broad “catch-all” crime of “picking quarrels and provoking trouble.” In April of the same year, I was tried in a closed hearing by the Xishan District Court and sentenced to 20 months in prison. I immediately filed an appeal upon receiving the verdict, but the appeal was summarily rejected by the Kunming Intermediate People’s Court without a hearing, upholding the original judgment. In July of the same year, I was taken to Kunming Prison to serve my sentence and undergo “reform,” where I have remained to this day.
It is abundantly clear that my case is a miscarriage of justice, a wrongful conviction maliciously fabricated by the relevant judicial departments in Kunming. I was originally a scientific researcher and independent scholar who shunned worldly disputes and dedicated my life’s work to the pursuit of truth. This unforeseen catastrophe has not only destroyed my academic reputation and career but has also been an inhuman persecution of my body and spirit. As I repeatedly review the so-called “indictment,” “judgment,” and “ruling” — all of which are utter nonsense — and reflect on the entire process, from the violent arrest and interrogation by the police, to the sentencing recommendations and prosecution by the procuratorate, and the verdict and ruling by the court, I am deeply struck by the arrogance, despotism, and bloody violence of the relevant law enforcement personnel. Their so-called “righteous” enforcement of the law, carried out with such impunity, is nothing but a crime against citizens, the nation, the people, and indeed all of humanity, in complete disregard of Party discipline and national law. It is profoundly ironic that these so-called “guardians of the Constitution” have, on the contrary, thoroughly exposed their evil nature as a criminal syndicate, a cult-like mafia that is anti-state, anti-society, anti-civilization, and anti-humanity.
At present, I have been stripped of my basic civil rights to defend myself, to file complaints, and to report offenses. I am cut off from all outside contact, deprived of my basic personal freedom, and subjected day after day to all manner of harassment and torture by the prison guards. But as a scientific researcher, the Buddhist belief that “what goes around comes around, and retribution is certain” is also a fundamental creed in my heart. I firmly believe that the dark veil of evil can never eclipse the brilliance of truth. Furthermore, as a new-generation Chinese citizen with a steadfast belief in the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation and the building of a strong China, I am confident that Chinese society will inevitably return to the path of the rule of law, and that “the net of heaven is vast; though its mesh is wide, nothing escapes it” will be a historical inevitability!
